The Labour Party’s spokesperson for the sustainable development of Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, referred to the state of the roads because of unfinished work, saying that Gozo was now a “centre of shame rather than a centre of excellence in the Mediterranean”

Dr Refalo said that on the 22nd February 2008, shortly before the last General Election, the Prime Minister opened two road sections that had been rebuilt.

“The Prime Minister said that these two roads had reached ‘European standard’ and made up part of a series of roads that would see the island as a centre of excellence.

“Those two road were a section of the road from Mgarr to Victoria and a section from Victoria to San Lawrenz. It is now almost five years later and this series of roads has still not been completed, despite the fact that a vast amount of money has already been spent, Dr Refalo concluded.”

The PL spokesperson for Families, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Dr Justyne Caruana, said that the Labour Party believes in family values. Stating, “that the Party is concerned with the situation where Gozitan women, because of work committments, have to travel to Malta on a daily basis, with all the dangers and drawbacks that are involved.

“In the public sector there is a mechanism in place to enable a pregnant woman to have the option, if she wishes, to be transferred to Gozo until after the birth. At times this process takes too long, which is to the detriment of the health of both the mother and the unborn child.

“There must be a system put in place where as soon as a pregnancy has been confirmed, the mother should be then transferred to Gozo as soon as possible. This is an important aspect of health and safety at work and the Government must take this responsibility towards safeguarding the mother and her unborn child, during this most delicate stage in her pregnancy,” Dr Caruana concluded.
