An alternative energy project consisting of the installation of photovoltaic panels is underway on the roof of Ghajnsielem Parish Church and the Parish Centre. The project is part of a €346,000 project that Gozo Curia has embarked which will see it install photovoltaic panels on five buildings as its contribution to eco-Gozo.

The Minister for Justice, Dialogue and the Family, Chris Said, recently visited the ongoing work on the project. The Parish Priest of Munxar Fr Michael Said and Fr Eddie Zammit of the ‘Raghaj it-Tajjeb’ Pastoral Center in Fontana were also present, since both communities are to benefit from similar assistance.

Fr Eddie Zammit on behalf of the Gozo Curia underlined the need to safeguard the environment and noted that similar projects for the generation of clean-energy were also in-hand at the Vatican.

The Ghajnsielem project consists of 84 photovoltaic panels of which 61 are situated on the roof of the Parish Centre with the remainder on the Parish Church. The total cost for this project was €66,049.21, of which €53,500.85 was financed by the European Fund for Regional Development and national funds.

The system on the Church roof will offer 5.75kWp thus generating around 9200 unit (kWh) of electricity annually. The system found on the Parish Centre generates 15.25kWp thus generating around 24400 unit (kWh) of electricity annually.

The St Joseph Band of Ghajnsielem has also embarked on a similar project and it is now in the final process of awarding the tender for the installation of a 27kWp Photovoltaic System consisting of 120 solar panels on the roof of the band club premises.

Taking into factor the PVs already installed on the Local Council premises, Dr Said pointed out that the centre of Ghajnsielem will soon have one of the largest photovoltaic systems concentrated in a very small area.
