In this year’s Christmas message for 2012, President George Abela said that solidarity plays an important role in society, people need to help those in need, such as families at risk of poverty, people with special needs and the unemployed.

The President appealed to public officials to act in line with the highest morals and ethical values and to respect their position.

He said he is proud of the Maltese values and traditions and the latter attracts admiration from many others.

The President mentioned the situation that is occurring within the judiciary system, saying that he had not lost confidence in the system and that the greater majority of its members carried out their duty with honesty and integrity.

The President continued by saying that he was comforted that the country has an effective system that will ensure that no-one can be above the law.

President Abela spoke of other matters that were of great importance during 2011, such as the introduction of divorce and the debate on the subject of IVF.

The President thanked everyone who had contributed to the Malta Community Chest Fund and encouraged the public to continue to show their solidarity with l-Istrina 2012 which gets underway on Wednesday.

The President wished the Maltese people a Merry Christmas on behalf of himself and his wife.
