The Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care, Mario Galea today launched the publication X’Hin hu? written by Charles Scerri and Trevor Zahra. Raymond Gialenze was responsible for photography.

A few years ago, the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Elderly and Community Care launched the book In-Nannu Nesa x’Jisimni written by Trevor Zahra. The book was aimed for children to understand better the condition of dementia.

X’Hin Hu? is aimed for an older audience, relatives and friends of persons affected by dementia. The book gives them more knowledge about this condition and helps them in giving support and assistance.

The authors used the graphic story technique to deliver their message. Besides the story, the book includes information on how an individual can detect that a person is affected by this condition. Information about the available services is also included.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that “during this term the Government has taken several initiatives to help people with dementia. These include the €9 million project John Paul II Block at St Vincent de Paul which for the first time offered dementia friendly environment. At the mentioned residence, there is also an Activity Centre for people with dementia living in the community.

“At Zammit Clapp Nursing Home there is another ward for dementia clients. Rehabilitation Hospital Karin Grech is offering a memory clinic service where people suffering with dementia are referred by their doctor. In 2012, there were 70 new cases and 364 follow ups. Another project for people with dementia is St Jean Antide Complex; an investment of € 2 million.”

The Parliamentary Secretariat for the Elderly and Community Care together with the Malta Dementia Society set up a helpline for the public. The number is 2208 1826. Last year 281 people made use of this service.
