From time to time foreign circus companies visit Malta for a period of weeks to perform shows which may include animal acts.

The Government said in a statement this afternoon, that some individuals and organisations feel they must protest against these shows because in their view it is animal cruelty.

For this purpose the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Roderick Galdes, will shortly be launching a number of consultation meetings with groups, individuals, NGOs and stakeholders to to discuss this topic in order to work towards the protection of animals.

The main aim is for a white paper to be drawn up for discussions to enable better regulation in this area, which will ultimately lead to a decision on whether the country should permit the use of animals in circuses or not.

“This is a Government that listens and consults to make the best decisions in the interest of all those involved.”
