Saturday evening saw the presence of the Maltese contingent from the Malta University Sports Club in the opening ceremony of Universiade 2013 which is taking place in Kazan, Russia between the 6th and 17th of July.

45,000 people cheered on the Maltese delegation as Rebecca Sarè proudly carried the Maltese flag. This electrifying atmosphere, coupled with the determination of the athletes proved a spring board for the athletes’ forthcoming events.

Yesterday morning saw the start to the Maltese athletes’ competition. First off was Matthew Croker, in the 400m running in the third heat out of four. Running in the fastest race, proved beneficial for him as he bettered his personal best for the fourth time this season, again dipping under the 50 second mark.

Croker ran a Personal Best of 49.84 seconds. Next up was Andy Grech, as he lined up for the 100m an hour later. Despite the sluggish start from Grech, he picked up well to finish the race in 11.16.

The flag bearer Rebecca Sarè was next up in the long jump. In the Group B Qualification round, qualifying was 6.25m and Rebecca jumped a Personal Best of 5.57m, this positive result will help Sarè in her more favored event, the triple jump on Tuesday.

The Athletes have now settled down and are focused on their training and competitions, despite some difficult situations encountered in the first days. Team spirit is high, especially after the positive results of Day 1.
