In view of Prime Minister Muscat’s declaration, following talks with Prime Minister of Italy Enrico Letta, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson Prof. Arnold Cassola said, “It is positive that Prime Minister Muscat stated, ‘I’m glad to see that we share the same views on Libya as a part of the solution on migration. It’s unprecedented to have Libya open to discussions and looking north in finding a solution together. We will convey a message to Libya that the EU is ready to cooperate and help it on training, infrastructure and controlling its borders.’

“However, no mention seems to have been made of convincing Libya to sign and ratify the 1951 Geneva Convention on the protection of refugees. The respect of such convention on the part of the Libyan authorities is an essential first step,” concluded Prof. Cassola.
