MEPA has allocated €30,000 for 10 local councils and five NGOs, for the hosting of various activities on car-free day. Traditionally celebrated across Europe, this year it is between the 16th and 22nd of September. This year’s European Mobility Week slogan, is “Clean air – it’s your move!”
Johann Buttigieg the MEPA CEO said that the Authority wanted to have an active role to raise awareness on carbon emissions.
He called on the public to make much better use of public transport, saying that the service had improved since its inception. Other suggestions include car sharing and the use of bicycles.
A committee composed of members of MEPA, the Malta Resources Authority, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Transport Malta and local councils chose the councils and NGOs that will benefit from the funds.
In Gozo they are the Ghajnsielem Local Council and the Don Bosco Oratory.
In Malta the Councils chosen are Birgu, Kalkara, Floriana, Santa Venera, Attard, Fgura, Dingli, Lija and Mellieha. The NGOs are Friends of the Earth, Anici Band Club Qormi, Inspire and Bicycling Advocacy Club.
