Readers Letter – “The recent NGO press release concerning Hondoq stated that they had become aware of further changes that had been made to the 2002 draft version of the GCLP, without consultation – changes that made it easier for developers to build in ODZ areas.
In particular it pointed out that the Qala Creek project went against the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Protocol, to which Malta is a signatory.
Malta, as host to the present conference in Floriana concerning the implementation and enforcement of Environmental Legislation, could lead by example by declaring that the Qala Creek project will not get approval (in accordance with all the recommendations) and that Hondoq will become a National Park for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.
This, as opposed to Malta and Qala Creek being showcased at next year’s conference, as an example of what not to do.”

I hope that the local authorities are reading this letter and seriously working towards what you have suggested. It is a very important note. Also, I read the ngo’s article you are referring to and there is enough information (if the authorities want) to say no to Qala creek. Well Done to all those that are fighting to save hondoq. it is too precious to lose.
Its a bit of a cheek Malta hosting an international conference of implementing and enforceing of environmental legislation when they can’t even implement and enforce MEPAs own recommendations which are against the Qala Creek project!!
I agree totally Jane. Hondoq needs to be protected once and for all as this sword of Damocles has been hanging over it for far too long.
