The Malta Communications Authority (MCA), together with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Competitiveness and Economic Growth and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, have launched a new ICT training scheme for people aged 65 years and over in order to encourage more individuals in this age bracket to take the first step and start engaging more actively with technology and in related online activities.
The initiative was launched at the Birkirkara Local Council, one of the centres that will be offering this training. It is estimated that 67% of Maltese aged 55 years and over have never used the Internet.
This means that approximately two thirds of the Maltese older population are excluded from taking part in the online activities of the community, keeping in touch with family and friends online, using a number of eGovernment services as well as, other online services, such as online shopping and internet banking.
This training scheme, which is being offered free of charge, entitles older individuals to participate in a practical 20 hour training programme that is specifically designed for the needs of adult learners. Participants will be given the opportunity to experience some of the most common, everyday uses of the Internet, such as sending an email, or simply looking for some information online.
The training will be offered at 12 Community and Technology Learning Centres (CTLCs) that are established across Malta and Gozo. The programme will be delivered by tutors experienced in adult education. Moreover, training manuals, especially designed for the scheme, will be made available in both Maltese and English.
Dr. Zammit Lewis, Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth, stated that “Individuals should not use age, gender and employment status as an excuse to stay away from the digital world.” “We need everyone online if we really want to achieve a forward-looking inclusive society and a digital economy that seeks to advance and prosper in the years to come,” he added.
Franco Mercieca, Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, welcomed the initiative saying that through today’s technologies we can remain more active and relevant within our communities.
“We just need to make sure that technology is accessible to all, irrespective of age. Technology will help our older population to continue living independently in their own homes for a longer period of time. Being independent at such an age is crucial for their overall well being. By embracing technologies, these individuals will be able to shop, make use of a number of banking services and look up endless information on their health, all from the comfort of their own home,” he continued.
“The response so far has been nothing but encouraging and a sure sign that our older population is eager to learn. I strongly encourage them not to give up and to apply for this course as it will lead to a whole new world full of opportunities,” concluded Dr. Mercieca.
The training is being offered on a first-come first-served basis. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up by calling 25903137 or 25903173 from Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 4:30pm. Applications close on the 18th of October 2013
