Head of the PN delegation in the European Parliament David Casa, has been appointed rapporteur on the Council Directive concerning the effects in the taxation area linked to the new legal status of the region of Mayotte.

Mayotte is a French overseas region with an area of 374 square kilometres and a population of the 212,645. It is located in the Northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mozambique.

“In a referendum in 2009 the population approved their accession to status of overseas region, which took place in 2011. They are now due to become an Outermost Region of the European Union on 1 January 2014. This report, in part, prepares for that,” explained Casa.

In substance, the objective of this proposal is to bring Mayotte’s situation in line with that of other Outermost Regions listed in articles 349 and 355(1) of the EU Treaty. Casa said: “The objective of our work is to ensure that this region is subject to appropriate treatment under EU legislation when it becomes an Outermost Region on 1 January 2014.”

Since these documents involve technical measures in relation to application of tax legislation, the Casa Report will enable MEPs to take an informed decision. An urgent procedure has been selected in this case, as a means of ensuring the completion of the legislative process before the end of the year.
