One of the major events being organised by the Vatican during the Year of Faith is the Marian Day that is being celebrated this weekend.
Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu National Shrine was invited to participate in this event, and a group of over 50 Maltese and Gozitan pilgrims are currently in Rome to participate in the celebrations.
Around 150,000 pilgrims from around 800 Sanctuaries and Marian Organisations from 48 different countries from all over the world are currently in Rome to represent their Marian Sanctuary. On Saturday afternoon the group participated in the celebration led by Pope Francis when the statue of our Lady of Fatima was welcomed to Saint Peter’s Square.
Following meditations and prayers, Pope Francis delivered his special catechesis to the thousands of pilgrims presen in St. Peter’s Square.
Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu National Shrine is the only Shrine from the Maltese Islands participating in this event – and the official banner was also the only one accompanied by a group of three people representing a family, following a special permission which was granted by the organising committee.
This was granted on the basis of Pope Benedict XVI’s statement when he presented the Golden Rose to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu: “In your prayers refer to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu as Queen of the Family.”
Later in the evening the group also participated in the Prayer Vigil held at the Santuario del Divino Amore in the outskirts of Rome.
