The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) said that it is noting ongoing discussion about new languages in schools and would like to state its position on the matter.

The Union said it “agrees that new languages could be offered in Secondary Schools, including Chinese, for the reason that global trends are showing more economic activity and increased communication with Asiatic countries.”

However, the MUT added it “urges more support to Head of Schools and is appealing the Government to avoid the continued increase in time-table management complications.”

“On the other hand,” the MUT said it “has serious reservations about the introduction of foreign languages in Primary Schools. In the current circumstances it is already very difficult for a Primary School teacher to keep up with syllabuses and therefore it does not follow that time dedicated for core subjects is reduced even further.”
