Under the guidance of Mr Kenneth Scicluna and newly appointed education officer Mr Anthony Casaru, the Health and Safety Unit of the Directorate for Educational Services awards the Health and Safety Education Best Practice Award (HASEBA) to one school each year to recognise outstanding efforts in promoting health and safety educational issues.

This year, the award was given to the Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form, which is now part of Gozo College, for its outstanding efforts in organising a variety of complementary-curricular activities as part of its holistic learning programme.

The health and safety teachers at Sir M.A. Refalo Sixth Form, Mr Andrew Dimech and Mr Charles Daniel Saliba, have regularly hosted qualified guest speakers to talk about issues such as internet and mobile scams; plastic money and fraud; the responsibilities involved with loans, debit cards and credit cards; road safety; drug and alcohol problems; and Internet safety and social media threats.

These talks have proved to be an eye-opening experience for students, parents and teachers. The Department also awards the Health and Safety School Certificate of Merit (HaSSoM) to schools that have reached the pre-established level of preparedness for healthy and safe environments.

This year, three schools from Gozo College reached this level and received this award: Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form and the Sannat and Xewkija primary schools.
