“There should be a greater combined effort so that Malta can gain more benefit from a larger amount of centralised funds in the forthcoming programming period.” This was stated by the Parliamentary Secretary for EU funds Dr. Ian Borg while he was addressing an information session concerning the role of centralised funding in the coming seven years.
Dr Borg announced that during 2007-2012 Malta did make use of centralised funding through various programmes; €96.16M in total. This amount, however, is rather low considering the whole budget that had been allotted to this particular funding. Parliamentary Secretary Borg stressed that in the coming 7 years the Government was committed to provide a greater over-all thrust so that NGO’s, SMEs and other government entities can be better assisted so as to exploit even further such funds.
“Taking greater advantage of these funds through focused priorities of Malta’s structural funds, we would be in a better position to meet European targets for 2020 that include generating growth economy that would be both sustainable and inclusive,” he said.
