‘The two Medlycott Baronets who painted Malta,’ is the title of an upcoming public lecture by Joe Sultana, organised by the Malta Historical Society, as part of its Public Lecture Series 2013 – 2014.

Sir W.C.P. Medlycott (1831 -1887) was the 3rd Baronet of the Medlycott family. He was a naturalist and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. He used to visit Malta frequently to study and draw the Island’s natural history, as well as to hunt and collect birds.

His main contribution to Maltese Natural History, apart from his drawings, is an appendix ‘Notes on the Geology, Botany, and Natural History of Malta’ in Seddall’s Malta: Past and Present (1870).

He also published a catalogue of Maltese birds for private circulation. During one of his long visits to Malta he was visited by his brother Sir E.B. Medlycott (1832 – 1902), who during his visit, painted several Maltese landscapes.

His painting book, which includes his watercolour landscapes is presently held by one of the Medlycott’s descendants Sir M. Tregonwell Medlycott.

Joe Sultana is an ornithologist and consultant to the Council of Europe’s Diploma for Protected Areas and to Birdlife Malta. Formerly Principal Environment Officer, Planning Authority Board member, Secretary and President of M.O.S (now BirdlIfe Malta), Council Member of Birdlife International, Chairman of the COE Naturopa Centre and Chairman of Ornis Committee. Authored several ornithological and nature publications.

The lecture is being held on Tuesday, the 21st of January, starting at 6.00pm at the Church of St Catherine of Italy, Valletta.
