The Gozo University Group said in a statement today that it is “disappointed at certain comments made by Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Dr Stefan Buontempo during a meeting which was held regarding investment in sport in Gozo.”
While GUG said that it commends the discussion of various possibilities for improvement and implementation of new sporting facilities on our home island, it added that “Dr Buontempo’s statement that the proposal for a public swimming pool in Gozo should be disregarded due to not being financially viable strikes us as a negative and non-productive manner of treating such an issue.”
“It is understandable that certain projects appear unfeasible on an island with such a small number of citizens. However, GUG believes that instead of discarding ideas which would provide resources that are until now exclusive to Malta, one should focus on finding a feasible way of creating these resources,” the Group said.
“The work possibly put in for a pool in the north of Malta could be applied instead to the same project in Gozo. We appreciate Dr Buontempo’s honesty and effort in finding a solution but would like to stress that such an issue does not simply concern geographical distance yet is rather a matter of equal opportunity for both Gozitans and Maltese,” the Gozo University Group concluded.
