The Minister for Gozo. Dr Anton Refalo, together with the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Competitiveness and Economic Growth, Dr Edward Zammit Lewis, yesterday launched a new learning centre in Gozo – TCTC

Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis said that the main purpose is to create a digital society and improve the knowledge of the individual. According to 2013 statistics, 28% of Maltese individuals have never used the Internet. These individuals are excluded from taking up jobs that entail the use of computers and related technologies. Others are also missing out on online opportunities including; eGovernmnet, online shopping, online banking and other communication opportunities such as social networking.

One of the objectives of the Member States of the European Union is that 85 % of the population uses the Internet. Together we can work to achieve this goal and so that every citizen can use technology wisely, so that it can be of value to him and society, said Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis.

He added that in the coming weeks, the Government will also launch the National ICT Strategy, which covers 2014 and 2020 in this field. The Strategy that will set out clear policies and actions that will guide Malta to achieve its digital agenda targets. The country’s future relies on the ability of all its citizens to become digitally engaged and to become part of a dynamic digital workforce and a more inclusive society.

Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis said that the Government is working continuously to reduce this digital divide, especially from 40 + years and over.

For his part the Minister for Gozo, Dr. Anton Refalo, welcomed the new Centre and said that he was pleased at the substantial number of Gozitans who are showing interest in learning in this field.

He added that the Government, through proactive policy, recognised that the primary key to alleviate the problem of Gozo’s double insularity, is the development in the field of media use of information technology.

Dr Refalo concluded by expressing the full support of the Ministry for such initiatives, to continue to work together with private companies and local councils to reduce digital illiteracy.
