“What a lovely day it was- a bit windy but it was perfect for Sunday afternoon’s Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green Hike, organiser Louis Debattista said.

“We continued on our mission to clean Gozo’s perimeter on this our seventh clean-up hike of 2014. The local council of Sannat kindly provided transport and materials (recycling bags, sanitizing wipes and gloves) for our hike.”International group of volunteers take part in Gozo clean-up hike“We left Qala at 1.00pm as usual and waited at the meeting place in front of Sannat church until 1.30pm for participants coming from other villages.”

Louis said that it was an international group with familiar faces and newcomers as well- an Englishman who works with a scuba diving company in Xlendi, another Englishman living here in Gozo, and also a Gozitan who is involved with the Gozitan NGOs.

“I was happy he joined us on our hike from Sannat to Xlendi,” Louis added. “He has done a great job with getting recognition for some athletes from Gozo; he set up a TV programme on Zona Sport which featured all the sports club in Gozo and was instrumental in getting 5 Gozo Athletes nominated for best athletes of the year in Malta.”

“Our hike began from Sannat and we collected a considerable amount of recyclable waste from a road in the fields. The rest of the hike along the coast was a nice break as there was very little trash and the scenery along the coast from Sannat to Xlendi is truly spectacular. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful place!”

Louis said, “I encourage more locals to join us; it is really such a great way to spend an afternoon- walking through the gorgeous countryside, meeting new people and making friends, getting a little exercise and doing something good for the environment.”

“Again eco-Gozo and the Minister for Gozo: let’s not wait. Tomorrow never comes. We need to address the issue of littering and dumping in Gozo. It is a real problem here. We need no dumping/no littering signs and enforcement with fines.” Louis commented, “it’s nice to see the grass being cut, but please ensure that rubbish is picked up at the same time.”
