Way back in 2011 Kurt Dalli was in the winning team of the Malta Mathematics Olympiad. Kurt, together with his friend James Zammit, Kurt is starting to realise that their hobby – developing mini-games, software programming, and the like – can turn into an actual job. This is why they founded Skylabs Malta, a startup which focuses on app development, but not only.
Their latest creation is an app that gives a super simple overview of the candidates contesting the MEP elections on Saturday 24th May. It is a perfect tool for people for whom all the electoral frenzy of the past weeks was nothing more than white noise. All they need to do is download the app and go through the candidates by name, by face, by whatever strikes their fancy.
“Our central value is simplicity,” James claims. Having both learned the art of programming early on, the two friends and classmates at Saint Aloysius Sixth Form, set out to make life easier through their creations.
While studying at Saint Aloysius Sixth Form, James managed the startup iApply, collaborating with Corinthia Malta in the context of the Junior Achiever Award. The following summer, he was hired as a technician at Compunet, the local electronics store.
A couple of months later James was awarded a scholarship by Apple Inc. to attend the renowned Worldwide Developers Conference 2013 for his programming expertise. His app ‘Distract Me’ won the Junior Achiever Young Enterprise Company of the Year Award 2014.
Kurt, on the other hand, started out maintaining a number of websites and went on to cofound ThinkSync, winners of the Most Creative Product/Service Award in the Junior Achiever Award 2013 (not to mention that he is a prominent local middle distance runner, having been selected to participate abroad in various athletics competitions!).
Not bad at all for a couple of 18-year olds. On the day they were presenting the final version of the MEP elections app to the staff at the European Parliament Information Office, they had a confession to make. “Tomorrow we have our Pure Maths ‘A’ Level exam. We just hope you like it as it is…”
The app ‘MEP Elections’ is available from Apple’s Appstore and Google Play.
