The Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo and the Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 Ian Borg, this morning announced the new plans for the entrance to the Cittadella, in Victoria.

The presentation took place in front of the Cathedral, and the visitors were given a tour of the work completed so far, as well as the present excavations.These new plans that have been introduced include the original passageway for preservation, which was uncovered during the restoration work that is currently underway on the Citadel fortification.The discovery includes the original arched entrance to the Citadel. It is believed that in front of the main entrance to the Citadel there was a small tunnel leading inside. This passage, partly cut in hard rocks and partly built and roofed, is thought be part of the defence planned with a type of wooden bridge, so that when the bridge was raised in case of attack by the enemy, there was still a way to gain access to the fortification.

The Cittadella plans will be exhibited in the Ministry for Gozo and in the office of UNESCO in Xewkija.
