Tourism Minister Dr Edward Zammit Lewis has welcomed figures announced by the NSO this morning, which showed that between July and September 1,499,734 passengers crossed to Gozo, a 6.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

In August alone there was an increase of almost 9% in the number of people that crossed to Gozo compared to last year, the NSO said today..

Gozo ferries had carried 1,499,734 passengers. August on its own saw a 9% increase. This number of passengers, the Minister said, was the highest recorded since before the start of the recession.

Dr Zammit Lewis said the these positive figures further reinforces the importance of domestic tourism, when many Maltese families choose to spend the days of their holidays in Gozo.

He added that the Government was committed to continue to support and encourage improvement in the Gozitan tourism product, in order to further develop and strengthen the tourism sector in Gozo for both foreign and domestic visitors, which will result in a boost for the economy of Gozo as well as aid employment.
