The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) Board has approved planning permission for the development of a new block to accommodate an emergency ward with 68 beds, a national crisis unit and plant rooms within the confines of Mater Dei Hospital in Tal-Qroqq.
The new block will also be replacing the planned extension which had been granted through another planning permit, which permit could not be utilised after it resulted that the existing building structure was not robust enough to support additional floors, MEPA said.
The new extension to the hospital, which will replicate the design, height and layout of the existing blocks, will be constructed on a parcel of land between the existing mortuary and the emergency wards.
