“Two thirds of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through a healthier lifestyle,” Chris Fearne said today during the launch of the consultation process of the National Diabetes Strategy.

When addressing stakeholders present, Chris Fearne highlighted three key hurdles that need to be tackled in an effort to slow down the progress of diabetes and reduce the number of complications related to this condition.

“The main challenges at stake are the availability of diabetes treatment within the community, the need for protocols and healthier lifestyles,” said Fearne.

This strategy seeks to expand treatment possibilities whilst improving the management of diabetes. Ultimately the aim is to prevent or postpone complications and raise awareness.

“The recent decision to increase the number of free HGT strips, used in blood sugar tests for diabetics under the age of 18, shows this Government’s commitment to ensure better standards of living for diabetics,” said Fearne.

Dr Fearne thanked all professionals who have contributed to the preparation of the document for consultation and invited the public to contribute towards a nationwide approach to diabetes.
