The Malta Historical Society is holding its next public lecture for 2015. Entitled: ‘A History of the Holy Water Stoup in Malta – An overlooked objet d’Art in out Churches?’ It will be delivered by Maria Cassar.
This lecture traces the uses rituals and symbolism associated with holy water and provides an artistic sketch of how basins and fonts developed over a period of two thousands years, with an emphasis on the European continent.
The main part of the lecture will be devoted to the artistic development of basins and fonts studied in the Maltese Islands and will include a presentation of over 100 examples from local churches and chapels.
Maria Cassar is a graduate in History of Art (Hons.) from the University of Malta and she looked at holy water fonts as the subject of her undergraduate dissertation.
She is currently reading for her MA in History of Art with a focus on the art of Willie Apap. 1950-1970.
The lecture is taking place on Tuesday, the 10th of March, starting at 6.30pm, in The Music Room, St. James Cavalier, Valletta. The public are invited to attend.
