Students attending primary and secondary schools in Gozo are once again being given the opportunity to participate in the Skolasport programme being organised at the Gozo Sports Complex every Saturday between 1st November and the end of May. Skolasport activities have been organised in Gozo for the past eleven years through the initiative of the Ministry for Gozo and the coordination of the Gozo Sports Complex.

Sessions are held on Saturday mornings and participants are free to use organised transport which leaves Gozitan village squares at 08.30 hrs and returns at approximately 12.30 hrs.

Hip-hop, breakdance, lawn tennis, gymnastics, indoor climbing, martial arts, handball and basketball are some of the sports disciplines included in this year’s programme. Three new disciplines will be introduced in this year’s skolasport programme, mainly table-tennis, cycling and football skills. Both the latter disciplines have resulted as the most popular amongst the preferences of those who have handed in their applications up to now.

It is to be noted that table tennis sessions have been made possible following major refurbishment works recently carried out in the table tennis room. Another initiative being taken for the first time this year is that of introducing Year I primary school pupils to Kidz Blitz, thus instilling in them a sporting spirit from a tender age.

Other activities have been planned in order to enhance the programme and provide information to participants throughout the year. Professional lecturers will be invited to deliver talks on healthy eating, body mechanisms and first aid. Visits to the Marsa Sports Complex will also be organised so that Gozitan students may participate in various sporting events together with participants of Skolasport in Malta. A Sports Day will be organised in December while a martial arts festival, which will be open to the general public, will include demonstrations by professional athletes in spirit combat, kick boxing, Olympic wrestling, akido, kung-fu and karate.

The Skolasport 2008 programme will come to an end at the end of May with the annual progressive Show, during which participants will be able to demonstrate the progress they achieved during the year in their favourite sport.

A Customer Care desk has been set up at the Gozo Sports Complex in order to cater for complaints and suggestions related to Skolasport. This also serves to enhance the services offered to the Gozitan public within the sports and educational sectors.
