With effect from the 4th of April, Local Councils will collect bulky waste and waste containing electronic equipment, known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), through the implementation of a new procedure.
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Stefan Buontempo, explained that residents are encouraged to give a precise description of the waste material to be collected when contacting their Local Council, so that it is disposed of in accordance with the new procedures.
He said that through an agreement between the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Climate Change, the Malta Tourism Authority and the Malta Planning & Environment Authority (MEPA), from the 15th of March, all Local Councils will begin to complete special forms before disposing of bulky waste and WEEE. These forms will be given to MEPA to provide the necessary permits for the council to dispose of waste in accordance with the conditions attached to the permit.
"Moreover, waste can not be disposed if there is not all the documentation approved,so that there is a clear trail as to where the waste originated."
He added that "thanks to this new procedure, Malta will be moving with the European Directive on Waste Electronic and hence there is more accountability with waste disposal to ensure that there is no abuse."
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo said that Local Councils are committed to keeping their localities clean and to helping residents dispose of bulky materials.

Dear Dr buontempo, This is Louis Debattista we have met 2 years ago at the Gozo Ministry office. We talked about sports and you also mentioned to me about the clean ups hikes that we have done 2 years ago. We are still do in it and you also thank us for the good work. We are the Gozo Greyhounds Sports Club with Gozo Rocks Clean & Green Hikes. What I have notes that when Local Councils in Malta or Gozo they bring this Skips for people to put house hold I have notes that people put car tires, glass bottles, Plastic bottles or other materials that can be recycled. Any chance that Local Councils inform everyone what they supposed to put on this Skips. Or who ever in charge at the spot to make sure people not to put the wrong Materials in the skip. Also maybe to send a note where things should go and what they supposed to put in the skips. Putting a sign what they should put inside the skips. Thank you and just to let you know we did everything you told me to do for the KMS but it never worked or never approved it which still no explanation why only thing they said they are not accepting applications.
