At the end of March 2016, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 349,386 up by 0.7 per cent over the previous quarter, the National Statistics Office said today.

Of these, 79.3 per cent were passenger cars, 13.7 per cent were commercial vehicles, 6.0 per cent were motorcycles, while buses and minibuses accounted for less than one per cent.

New licences issued in the first quarter amounted to 5,892. The majority of new licences (4,483 or 76.1 per cent of the total) were issued to passenger cars, followed by motorcycles with 858. Newly-licensed 'new' motor vehicles amounted to 3,002, or 51.0 per cent of the total, and newly licensed 'used' motor vehicles totalled 2,890.

In the first quarter this year, 110 vehicles were exported. Garaged vehicles amounted to 1,872, while other 2,604 were garaged for resale purposes. Scrapped vehicles totalled 9,457.

As at the end of March this year, 212,098 vehicles, or 60.7 per cent of the total, had petrol engines. Vehicles with diesel engines reached 135,676, or 38.8 per cent of the total.
