AD spokesperson for International Affairs, Mark Scerri, has said, “Alternattiva Demokratika would like to congratulate Mr Obama for his victory over Senator John McCain.”

Mark Scerri said that, “This is indeed a historic moment, because the Americans have overcome years of tense race relations, they have overcome racial barriers to elect the first Afro-American president”.

Mr Scerri continued by saying “The overwhelming majority of the Americans have decided to reject 8 years of Bush presidency, which has seen America clash with the rest of the world, particularly Europe, especially over reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and the War in Iraq.”

“We hope that Obama’s victory will bring a change in attitude and policies. We hope that on the international stage the USA will give more attention to ecological responsibility and adopt a multilateral approach towards international affairs. We also hope that Obama keeps his promises for the sake of all those millions of Americans who have so far had to live with out medical insurance coverage,” Mr Scerri added.

AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola concluded by saying, “We hope that this is the start of a new era in transatlantic relations, we also hope that Mr Obama sticks to his promises, namely that he will end the war in Iraq, that he will close Guantanamo, that he will restore habeas corpus and take a leadership role together with the European Union in combating the common threats of the 21st century – nuclear weapons and terrorism; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease.”
