Update – The ex-Mayor of Victoria, Samuel Azzopardi, appeared in Court this morning, where he was found guilty of being involved in a traffic accident last April, when he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Court also found him guilty of failing to provide a breathalyser sample without reasonable cause.

Magistrate Dr Joseph Mifsud fined Mr Azzopardi €2,000 and disqualified him from holding a driving license for six months. The Magistrate said that Mr Azzopardi knew that what had happened was wrong and had expressed his regret. He added that this incident should not impair his political career.

The Court decided that to acquit Mr Azzopardi of the charges against him for slight injuries to Emanuel Grech and involuntary injury caused to the detriment of Jenise Nancy Grech, as they had both chosen not to testify in the proceedings.

Update: In a statement following the ruling by Dr Mifsud, the PN announced that it had lifted Samuel Azzopardi’s suspension, and he will be nominated to be reinstated as the Mayor of Victoria.
