The newly refurbished Qala belvedere has been inaugurated by EU Funds Parliamentary Secretary Dr Ian Borg. Dr Borg said that the Qala Local Council has once again benefited from European funds, this time through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and was a project that qualified after a call made by the Gozo Local Action Group Foundation.
Dr. Borg said the Belvedere project cost a total of around €75,000, €40,000 of which was provided from European funds. The funds provided new landscaping, a number of benches, play equipment for children, as well as fountain providing fresh drinking water from an upgraded underground cistern and a new irrigation system for the plants and trees .
Parliamentary Secretary Borg said that he hoped that such initiatives will encourage more tourism in rural areas, both for the the tourists who visit the belvedere every day to admire the beautiful view across to Malta as well as for the people of Qala, and the many Gozitans and Maltese who frequently visit the area.
The Qala Local Council has named the newly furnished viewpoint the Anton Camilleri Belvedere, in honour of the former Qala Councillor who worked hard for his locality and passed away while he was still serving in the Council.
