Nature Trust (Malta) has appealed to the authorities responsible for the new Warden system to deploy Eco or countryside wardens and assign these to patrol the countryside of Malta and Gozo and especially ecological sensitive sites.
The NGO said that over the last years, with the help of various companies and groups, it has been carrying out regular clean ups in the Maltese countryside and Natura 2000 sites, including the sea bed.
"Despite all these efforts and the thousands of kilos of waste collected every year, such sites end up a dump yard again within weeks of the event," stated NTM
Nature Trust President – Vincent Attard said that, "it is useless if the NGO and other partners keep cleaning these sites and then the responsible authorities do not pull up their socks to ensure that these sites are then kept clean."
He added that some sites are known for dumping as this illegal activity happens regularly in sites – such as Pembroke ranges, Xrobb L Ghagin near St Paul's Battery, Il Maghluq of Marsascala, Il Ballet of Marsaxlokk, in the Majjistral Park etc.
"Despite reporting these areas and cleaning them, nothing happens after the clean up and the sites end up a dump again."
Attard said that over the years the NGO has been appealed to the authorities to patrol the areas and fine the polluters but such appeals keep falling on deaf years.
NTM said that it now hopes that the new LESA eco wardens are deployed to patrol sites "and not just restricted to minor offences like just monitoring skips or dog pooh offenders."
"The whole of the island is calling for enforcement as this effects the economy, social wellbeing and the environment."
NTM also urged these wardens to patrol beaches to make sure beach users keep the beaches clean day and night. "Keeping beaches clean is also important as these form part of the eco system and are also promoting tourism. Clean beaches are also a mandatory criteria for Blue Flag eco label," it said.

What ever happened to the Green Wardens that were suppose to be created a couple of years ago.Its so simple that I can’t believe no one has acted on it . Be proud “Keep Gozo Tidy”

I fully agree with Green Wardens. In Malta at Ghar Hassan is full of rubbish. DIRTY PEOPLE goes there at night and they leave destruction behind them. All sorts of rubbish.( Ghar Hassan is like a lovers place.)
Gozo Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes: are about to stop what they have been doing for the last 3 years. Doing the hikes, enjoy the country side and clean while the hike. For 3 years it hart me because most of the people showing up for the hikes and clean our environment where outsiders and not Gozitians. schools, Churches to busy with things around the stone and books, and Government very little help ofter 21/2 years trying to get help. Well, given up everything I was enjoying doing and help our island to keep it clean for our Future life and kids. NO stopping here why because 80% does not give a shit and the rest which are most of them outsider care. NO not only that I am thinking of selling and leave the country that I was born and hoped and care for. NO I wanted a change but Malta & Gozo hard to see a change so I decided maybe I am the one needs a change and leave what I care and loved and start somewhere else. Shame on them.
We do understand your feelings & concern, do the same as we are doing and that is to leave and visit Gozo now & then, The little peaceful island its not what it used to be as i remember it in my younger days, Now its Maltese property owners, obtaining a local Gozo id, and renting their farm houses to other Maltese mainly younger people for peanuts accommodating about 8 at he same time, kicking up mayhem with radios full blast up to the early hours of the morning. leaving trails of broken rubbish bags & empty bottles for the dogs to take apart, i live in Qala and boy that is one hell of a snake pit this time of the year when the main islanders spend a few days on the island, cars parked to a teeth with no consideration to locals, very loud & mouthy mainly the women. if it weren’t for the local young people of Gozo and Louis Debattista at the helm,Gozo would go to the dogs, cause they worked hard to clean up the place and the same time enjoy a healthy walk in the country side months on end,, cleaning all the mess left behind as they go along. I am sorry to say i and my family are now preparing to leave for pastures new with Great regret for my little island, but as they say We’ll be back, and i do hope that visitors from the mainland will show some respect to us locals.
