The Planning Authority, forming part of a consortium with the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) has been accepted to form part of the Network of Copernicus Relays by the European Commission's DG for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

The Copernicus programme is a European system for monitoring the Earth. It consists of a set of systems that collect data from multiple sources which include Earth Observation satellites and in situ sensors such as ground stations, airborne and seaborne sensors.

It processes these data and provides users with reliable and up-to-date information through a set of services related to environmental and security issues. These services address six thematic areas: land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management and security. The Copernicus programme is coordinated and managed by the European Commission.

The Network of Copernicus Relays is an initiative whereby the European Commission will work closely with different stakeholders to promote the use of Copernicus data and information in each Copernicus Participating Country.

The Relays will be recognised by users as dedicated representatives and permanent contact points on Copernicus, acting as principal help desks/information points on the Programme. Relays will provide stakeholders, the public and experienced users with technical assistance and foster awareness activities.

By forming part of this Network, Malta aims to target intermediate and end-user communities to promote Copernicus as a source of free, open and reliable satellite data to meet the needs of local public services and to assist in the development of environmental services with high commercial potential by local entrepreneurs.

The Network of Copernicus Relays will be formally started off by the European Commission at the beginning of January 2017.
