Update: Gozo’s contribution to national GDP accounted to 4.3%, or €396.3 m

Update with Government statement below – Provisional estimates for 2015 indicate that the contribution of Gozo and Comino region to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at market prices accounted to 4.3 per cent or €396.3 million, the National Statistics Office said today. This was down slightly on the previous year, when it stood at 5.1 per cent, or €409.9 million.

Domestic Product: 2010-2015 – Gross Value Added (GVA) for the regions of Malta and Gozo and Comino increased by 10.0 per cent and 9.8 per cent, respectively when compared to 2014.

All industries in the region of Gozo and Comino registered increases when compared to the previous year.

The main increases resulted in economic activities relating to information and communication, professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support service activities and construction.

Almost all industries in the region of Malta registered increases, with the exception of the manufacturing industry.

The main increases were recorded in the industries comprising: real estate, construction and professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support service activities.

The contribution of the private sector in the Gozo and Comino region accounted to 72.0 per cent of the total GVA , while that in the Malta region accounted to 84.7 per cent.

Regional GVA at basic prices using the Production Approach is derived as the difference between output at basic prices and intermediate consumption at purchasers’ prices of industries physically located in each of the respective regions.

Thus, regional GDP is not a measure of income but strictly relates to the economic activity prevailing in a particular region. Chart 3 illustrates developments in GDP per capita at market prices for the regions of Malta and Gozo and Comino, respectively. It also compares the per capita GDP at market prices for Gozo and Comino region as a percentage of the national.

When compared to 2014, total population in Malta region increased by 1.2 per cent, whereas that in Gozo and Comino increased marginally.

Almost all industries in the Gozo and Comino region registered an increase in employment. Main increases resulted in information and communication and professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support service activities.

Drops in employment in Gozo and Comino were mainly recorded in construction and public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities.

The majority of the industries in the region of Malta registered increases in employment. The main increases resulted in real estate, agriculture, forestry and fishing, arts, entertainment and recreation; repair of household goods and other services activities.

Decreases in employment in Malta were recorded in public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities.

Update: In a statement the Government said that Gozo’s economic growth is ten times more than the last year of the previous administration, while jobs in Gozo in 2015 increased by nearly 300, three and a half times more than in 2012, it said.

“This is just the beginning of a positive change for the island. Gozo next year will take on a fresh impetus, inter alia with the advent of the Bart’s medical school. Meaning that more and more high-quality jobs will be created in Gozo for Gozitans, ensuring that the wealth continues to reach everyone,” the Government said.
