The Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo has visited the sports complex in Victoria, where every Friday and Saturday, about 450 Gozitan children participate in the On The Move programme of sports activities.

Children are attending a 24 week course of activities in the Gozo sports complex as well as other facilities around Gozo. This year attendance is at a record number, doubling the figure from last year.

The On the Move programme is organised the Gozo Sports Board, in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and managed by SportMalta.

Dr Refalo said that the Ministry for Gozo is once again subsidising the cost of the On the Move Gozo programme, with Gozitan participants paying half price. The Ministry also offers free transportation from any village.

In addition, this year there are also organised activities on Fridays where pre-kinder and kinder children have specific sessions for themselves, and fitness sessions for adults, including for over 60s, which is of benefit to grandparents who are caring for their grandchildren, enabling them to take the sessions together.

There are several new disciplines for this year’s programme and those that are attracting the most interest are badminton, horse riding, cycling, chess, rugby, yoga, athletics, tennis, squash, dance, martial arts and gymnastics.

Minister Refalo thanked the Gozo Sports Board, saying that the work being carried out is achieving the desired effect with the record number of participants, he also gave thanks to the teachers and coaches. Finally Dr Refalo showed his appreciation for the full cooperation of SportMalta.
