With only a few days to go to the Strasbourg European Forum of Voluntary Work awards at the European Parliament of Strasbourg the public voting has picked up considerably.
Malta’s candidate, Astrid Vella, coordinator of the environment group Flimkien ghal Ambjent will be in Strasbourg for the award ceremony next Friday. Asked about her chances, Ms Vella replied “We have to be realistic; much depends on the public vote and Malta is up against countries like Germany, Britain and France with their populations of millions. So we’re asking the Maltese and Gozitan public to help us put Malta and its environment on the map by voting at http://www.benevolat.eu/en/vote.php. Surprisingly, repeat voting is allowed and votes from outside Malta are also being encouraged.
Ms. Vella came to public attention leading that Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA’s) different campaigns in order to save Malta’s natural and architectural heritage and especially quality of life. Besides leading national protest rallies in Valletta, FAA is now most active on the St. John’s Cathedral campaign, supporting Save Ramla in Gozo, working on MEPA reform and generally giving residents and civil society the voice they have lacked in the past.
