Europe Day is commemorated on the 9th of May, and in Gozo this important day will be celebrated too with an event at the Villa Rundle in Victoria.

This Europe Day Celebrations event, will be taking place on Sunday, the 7th of May, between 2.00pm and 6.00pm and is being organised by the Europe Direct Information Centre – Victoria Gozo, in collaboration with the European Commission Representation in Malta and the European Parliament Office in Malta.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy in this afternoon of entertainment, fun and cultural activities including performances by various dance groups and Novel Band. Other attractions include a bouncy castle, mega slide, carousel, balloon modelling, face painting, crafts, children’s fun and learning area, games and quizzes for all the family, food tasting, as well as various stands providing information on the EU and its member states.

Promotional material and EU publications will be distributed to those present.

Entrance is free and everyone is invited to go along and join in the fun and celebrations.

Europe Day on the 9th of May marks the anniversary of the ‘Schuman declaration,’ and is an important date for all Europeans.

At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations a thing of the past.

His vision was to create a European institution that would manage pooled coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
