There was an estimated 202,698 inbound visitors in April, the National Statistics Office said today, this was an increase of 21.9 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year.

The NSO noted that 162,065 inbound tourist trips were carried out for holiday purposes, while a further 20,141 were undertaken for business purposes.

There was a significant increase of 60.5 per cent registered in the number of business trips when compared to April 2016., the NSO said.

An increase in inbound tourists from EU Member States was registered, up by 20.9 per cent to 176,714 when compared to last year.

The NSO added that the majority of inbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44, followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket.

The number of nights spent went up by 15.0 per cent on last year, reaching almost 1.3 million nights. The largest share of guest nights (62.0 per cent) was spent in collective accommodation establishments. The NSO said that there was also an increase in tourist nights spent in private accommodation, up by 21.4 per cent on last year.

Tourist expenditure was estimated at €153.8 million, up by 24.9 per cent on 2016.

The number of tourist trips from January to April this year reached 548,475, up 22.9 per cent over the same period in 2016. Total nights spent also increased, up by 12.4 per cent, surpassing 3.5 million nights.

The NSO concluded their statement by saying that total tourist expenditure during this same period reached nearly €391.0 million, 17.6 per cent higher than that recorded for 2016. Total expenditure per capita stood at €713, a decrease of 4.3 per cent when compared to 2016.
