A set of 4 miniature sheets featuring traditional floor tile patterns, is being issued by MaltaPost tomorrow.

This type of traditional patterned tiles were introduced by the Ottomans and have been in use in the Mediterranean region since a long number of years.

They are used to decorate palaces, mansions, humble homes and also commercial outlets. The tiles that adorn many traditional Maltese houses, are known for their bold colours and geometric designs.

They were a feature of our houses for many years, and nowadays they have been incorporated in many modern designs.

MaltaPost said that the miniature sheets will have a face value of €1.00, €1.16, €2.36 and €3.00, and each miniature sheet will be made up of four stamps.

The four different patterns of Maltese floor tiles are drawn in ink by local artist Stephanie Borg.

The sheet measures 99mm x 99mm, a perforation of 13.75x 13.75 (comb.) bearing the Maltese Crosses watermark. Printex Limited produced the set in offset and the issue consists of 21,000 sheets of each denomination except for the €2.36 (59c) which consists of 51,000 sheets.
