The 2008 issue of the journal The Central Mediterranean Naturalist was officially launched by Nature Trust (Malta) at the Natural History Museum in Mdina on Friday, The Prime Minister presided over the event, stressing the need for financial support to be funnelled towards all aspects of scientific research in this country in order to achieve a veritable centre of excellence in this regard and peldging his support for similar initiatives.

The editor of the journal, Dr. Alan Deidun, recounted briefly the contents of the journal issues, which includes 10 full papers and 2 short communications, on aspects of local natural history.

Nature Trust similarly published 2 other journals in the past – Potamon and The Maltese Naturalist – and bound copies of the complete contents of all 3 journals (which constitute a veritable mine of information, with a total of 380 papers) are available from the NGO’s offices or by contacting Arnold Sciberras on bioislets@gmail.com.

Dr. Deidun also lauded the inspiring local naturalists who strove to produce quality research and reveal to the public aspects of the frequently downtrodden local natural heritage.

Mr Vincent Attard, the NGO’s President, stressed the need for financial support for NGO’s in the face of mounting economic difficulties they constantly face.. Mr Attard spoke of how the Scientific Journal started way back in the early 1960 as the Maltese Naturalist. This changed its name in 1974 to the Central Mediterranean naturalist. From a scientific journal bringing together papers of naturalist it today developed as a journal compiling papers of scientists and academics.

The Journal today is distributed in various European Universities due to their high scientific value. Mr Attard thanked all those who have contributed over the years to this journal and thanked Mr Guido Lanfranco who was the first editor of the Journal in 1962.
