Next week is Malta Meat Free Week, when from Monday, the 7th till Sunday, the 13th of October, thousands of individuals will take up the challenge to go one week zero meat as part of the challenge organised by VeggyMalta, with the theme – Make a Real Difference!

The organisers said that this is the second year for the challenge, which is targeted at increasing the growing community of vegans, vegetarians and also flexitarians (people who consume very little meat) in Malta.

The challenge aims to increase awareness of how easy it is to reduce and remove meat products from your life. To eat tasty healthy food.

Malta Meat Free Week and VeggyMalta co-coordinator Darryl Grima said that, “by choosing to do the challenge you are having an impact of climate change, biodiversity loss, animal cruelty and your health.”

“There are few things that an individual can do that can have such a wide positive impact as reducing their consumption of meat. A staggering 6 million animals are killed every hour for food across the world. It’s time to make a real difference,” he added.

Grima explained that this year Malta Meat Free Week has managed to involve various stakeholders from importers and retailers and restaurants in this common aim.

Over 100 shops, including the major supermarkets and online shops across Gozo and Malta have chosen to support the initiative and will be offering meat-free products at discounted prices.

Several restaurants are also participating and making additional meat free offers for their clients for the week.

Those who want to join the challenge can do so by clicking here.

The organisers are offering a weekend break at the Radisson Blu Resort St Julian’s for 2 people as a prize for someone that completes the challenge.

The campaign is sponsored by Valsoia as main sponsor and Sheese (a vegan cheese) and Love Beauty and Planet (vegan beauty products) as sponsors. It is important that people participating tag maltameatfreeweek on facebook or Instagram with their photos.

Darryl Grima concluded by saying that a number of organisations, groups and blogs have supported this initiative including MSPCA, Animal Liberation Malta, Marrow Health, Veg Fund and Cruelty Free Malta.
