Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri has said that there have been changes made to the Adopt a Pet Scheme following proposals from the public over the last few days, although the parameters will stay the same.
The scheme is being introduced to encourage people to adopt an animal from local sanctuaries rather than buying one.
He said that the public will now have a choice of authorising the grant as a donation to the sanctuary from which the pet was adopted, or receiving the €150 themselves after producing receipts for veterinary care, check-ups, vaccines etc.
i most strongly object to the idea of giving people money to adopt an animal. We all know that there are those who will keep the cash and dispose of the animal afterwards. Everyone I have spoken to of this stunt feels the same, Please, please, do not do it.
