191 applications covering 294 people have been received by the Ministry for Gozo in relation to the emergency accommodation compensation scheme.

The Ministry said in a statement that these applications are currently being evaluated. Payments will be effected in the coming days by direct deposit into the bank account of the applicant.

The scheme was launched by the Ministry following the suspension of the ferry service on the 12th of November and was applicable to Gozitans who spent the night in one of the hotels or guest houses that had been proposed by the Ministry for Gozo.

Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana pointed out that this immediate action had been taken for the first time by the Ministry for Gozo, however a contingency plan and criteria have already been prepared ready to trigger should the Gozo ferry service be suspended for an extended period of time.

Dr Caruana gave thanks to all Gozo Channel employees for their service.
