Update: In an updated statement from the Police, it has amended the earlier information that nobody was found to be under the influence of alcohol during traffic checks carried out in Malta last night, saying that in fact 2 persons were caught drink-driving in later checks.

Police have now advised that traffic inspection were continued across Malta during New Year’s Night, carried out by the Traffic Section, assisted by the Dogs Section.

During these later checks, a number of vehicles were inspected and another 17 people were fined for traffic breaches, including for dangerous driving, driving without a safety belt, driving without a valid license and vehicles caught sporting unauthorised tinted glass, among several breaches of other regulations.

Police said that one of the persons attempted to flee when he was signalled to stop during the road checks, but was stopped soon after following the immediate action of the Police.

Police said the earlier operation were carried out across Malta, in Floriana, Attard, Sliema, Burmarrad, St. Julians, Swieqi, Rabat, Zejtun, Fgura, San Gwann and Zabbar.

52 people were fined for traffic breaches including among others, driving without a valid driving licence, driving without a valid insurance policy, driving without a seat belt, vehicle being driven without a number plate, driving whilst using a mobile phone, speeding and driving vehicles with tinted glass or improper headlights, and none for drink-driving.
