Update with PN statement below – The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri has announced further measures aimed at non-essential travel between the islands which will become mandatory by a Legal Notice on Friday.

Besides screening for fever before passengers board the ship, a new form of screening will be introduced in order to ascertain the purpose for travelling between the two islands.

This is being done in order to discourage people from travelling between the islands for vacation purposes, the Minister said, and reiterated that, “now is not the time for weekend breaks or tour groups on Gozo.”

Travel will only be allowed for purposes of: 1.) Work; 2.) Medical reasons; 3.) In order to visit relatives recovering in hospital; 4.) Visits to relatives; 5.) Carriage of goods; and 6.) Returning to one’s ordinary residence.

Travel undertaken for the purposes of vacation, entertainment, or for day-tripping will not be allowed.

While thanking the public who on the whole, he said, are abiding by the directives, what was a recommendation, will now become mandatory.

Minister Camilleri stated that these are unprecedented measures, however, they are measures for the benefit of all.

The Minister thanked the public for their cooperation and especially all members of the medical staff, police, soldiers and members of the Civil Protection.

PN statement

The Nationalist Party has welcomed the measures announced by the Minister for Gozo to put in place more restrictions on who can cross from Malta to Gozo.

It said that, this is being done after the Nationalist Party spokespersons in recent days, and a large number of people also urged the Government “not to be afraid to take these steps to ensure that the health of the Gozitan and Maltese population is protected. these difficult times.”

The PN said, “these non-essential travel restrictions are a step in the right direction and therefore we urge the public to follow them.”
