Country not on lockdown, so no valid reason why hunting season can't open - KSUKaccaturi San Ubertu (KSU) in a statement, said that it “lauds the reasoned decision taken by the ORNIS Committee to open a quail hunting season this spring.”

KSU said that it “understands the precaution in deciding to implement this recommendation,” adding that, “in no way does it want a season that could endanger the health of hunters or the general public to open.”

However as the country is “not on lockdown,” KSU stated that it sees “no valid reason why a season in strict keeping with current or future measures in place due to Covid-19, should not be permitted.”

KSU added that it however, noted with regret that for the fourth consecutive year the proposals to open a spring hunting season on turtle dove “were again unconvincing.”

It argued that “when anyone can still walk, cycle, birdwatch or cycle keeping the required social distancing, a hunter should not face discrimination, even more so when during hunting his social distancing will be much more than that recommended.”

KSU questioned whether the Government would be “proactive, hunters ordered to stop hunting, had a similar scenario occurred during an open hunting or trapping season, under derogation or not, when all others can practice their activities according to health directives?”

The organisation concluded that “on these arguments KSU expects a reasoned official decision about the opening of this hunting season free from any influence stemming from baseless arguments raised by a sector of society that opposes spring hunting under any circumstances.”
