Gozitan Eman Borg has been appointed as the first Maltese Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.

The National Youth Council of Mata (KNZ) made the announcement in a statement on Monday, explaining that the Commonwealth Ambassador’s primary aim is to act as the bridge between the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Youth Council and Maltese youths while also enhancing the sense of belonging of young people to this institution.

KNZ said that “such a role will help establish KNZ and Malta as active protagonists in this global community, where its values of development, democracy and peace are needed more than ever to safeguard the positive cooperation on an international scale.”

It stressed that “in the current political climate, Maltese and Gozitan youths will have an integral part in finding innovative solutions to transform and connect our Commonwealth.”

Maltese young people will also benefit from more exposure to opportunities and future collaborations on a wide array of subjects, said KNZ.

Addressing the issues of unemployment, poverty, quality education, housing, sustainable environment and climate change, will be taken on as the priorities of the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.

The outcome will then be put forward to the International Task Force as part of the Commonwealth Youth Forum that will represent Commonwealth youths to the Heads of State during the CHOGM 2020.

KNZ congratulated Eman Borg for this role, extolling his wide-ranging experience of working within the Commonwealth sphere after representing Maltese youth in the 2019 Commonwealth Youth Forum and also winning the Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2017 on his activism with LGBTI+ Gozo.

Eman is currently a youth adviser to the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.
