Two new programmes, which are both a first of their kind worldwide will be available online from the ITS Campus in Gozo.

These are the Diploma in Climate Friendly Travel, in collaboration with The SUNx Program and the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management, in collaboration with DAN Europe (Divers Alert Network Europe).

Lectures for these two programmes will be available online, with the Bachelor of Science including also practical diving research/sessions around Gozo considering it is one of the favourite spots for divers around the world.

The two new programmes were launched along with the ITS prospectus for the academic year 2020-2021, during a virtual conference together with the Ministry for Tourism and Consumer Protection. Applications and prospectus for all the programmes are now available online.

During the conference, Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli, stated that Malta is again at the forefront in promoting two very important sectors: diving which is a very important tourism niche for our islands, and the challenge of climate change in tourism and how can tourism be more climate friendly.

The Minister added that ITS has once again proven its important role in educating and preparing the best trained personnel for Malta and Gozo’s tourism industry which will very soon again be expected to deliver a high-quality experience for tourists all year round.

The Diploma in Climate Friendly Travel, was first announced in February, and is pegged at Level 4, is offered in collaboration with SUNx and is the only ITS diploma which is not limited to ITS students only.

This study programme, will train students to support companies within the travel and transport industry in making the necessary changes to become carbon neutral, in view of the current global challenge of climate change.

SUNx Co-Founder, Professor Geoffrey Lipman, live from Belgium, added that SUNx Malta is delighted to collaborate with ITS to deliver the world’s first Climate Friendly Travel Diploma, to help create clean, green jobs to respond to the existing climate crisis and make a better future for our kids.

Professor Lipman added that they applaud the 2050 Climate Neutral vision of Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli for making this happen.

The Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management, in collaboration with DAN Europe, is pegged at level 6 and offered through the International School of Diving Safety and Medicine, a school launched in 2017 and formed specifically by DAN Europe and ITS, in collaboration with the Professional Diving Schools Association (PDSA).

Diving in Malta is sought after by 5% of tourists and year after year, Malta is voted as one of the top diving destinations worldwide by international divers.

Through a live communication from Italy, DAN Europe President and CEO, Professor Alessandro Marroni, said that diving implies extraordinary environment exposure requiring specialised techniques and safety culture.

The goal of the world’s first ITS Diving Safety Management course is to train professionals for the best development and sustainability of the diving industry in Malta and internationally.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, through a video message, stated that these programmes are a positive initiative, and even more positive that they will be held at the ITS campus in Gozo.

Minister Camilleri said he looked forward in “seeing individuals applying for such courses so that they are equipped with the necessary education for what will be required in the upcoming future.”

Apart from these two new programmes, the ITS prospectus includes 23 modular courses within 13 programmes of study which are divided in various levels starting from the Foundation programme at Level 2, up to a Master’s Degree at Level 7 of the Malta Qualification Framework.

Available courses include: Travel and Tourism; Rooms Division; Food and Beverage Service; Food Preparation; Events; Tour Guiding; Culinary Arts; International Hospitality Management; and Heritage Interpretation.

ITS Chairman Carlo Micallef and ITS CEO Pierre Fenech stated that it is of a great satisfaction seeing another two programmes launched in collaboration with highly respected international institutions. This is in line with the ITS strategy of internationalisation and the pursuit of excellence.

Micallef went on to say that never as today have we realised the importance of tourism for the Maltese economy and ITS has the important role to educate and prepare the best trained personnel for Malta and Gozo’s tourism industry.
