Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, in Friday’s daily briefing on the Covid-19 situation, advised that 2 new cases had been reported in the past 24-hours, with 19 more people recovered.

Prof Gauci said that there are 447 cases, 221 are currently active, with 223 patients recovered in total. There have been 3 deaths. The recovered cases will remain under quarantine for the next 7 days.

Of the new cases, a 43-year old Maltese male experienced symptoms on the 23rd of April but had unfortunately continued to attend work, so contact tracing is currently underway, Prof Gauci said.

The second is a 60-year old Maltese female carer, who works in a home for the elderly. She had no symptoms and was only discovered during routine screening following a change in shift.

Prof Gauci said that 611 swab tests had been carried out on Thursday, with 27,422 carried out so far.

Prof Gauci said that it is important to continue to follow the directives from the authorities and anyone experiencing symptoms should call 111.

In the last 24-hours, the health authorities stressed that although local transmission seems to have gone down, the public should continue observing social distancing measures and not needlessly leave their homes.

“The strategy for the removal of measures against the spread, once it comes into being, must be done under monitoring, calmly, and with caution to ensure that the spread does not reignite,” the authorities said.
