Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, said during Tuesday’s update on the Covid-19 situation, said that new 8 cases had been reported in the past 24-hours, from 1,072 tests taken, with 17 more people recovered.

Prof Gauci said that there are 458 cases, 151 are currently active, with 303 patients recovered in total. There have been 4 deaths. She explained that 30,000 tests have been taken so far.

From the 8 new cases, 5 are from the Hal-Far Centre, which is under lockdown. These were only found through testing, Prof Gauci said as none of these cases had shown any symptoms.

The other cases include a 52-year old English man residing in Malta, who experienced symptoms on 20th April, contact tracing is taking place with family and the private company where he works.

Another is a 29-year old female Maltese health care worker, whose symptoms started on the 26th of April. Prof Gauci explained that she had not been at work since experiencing symptoms, but contact tracing would be taking place with her family.

The remaining case is a 32-year old woman, who first had symptoms on 6th April, she is an allergy sufferer and had not realised the change in symptoms. Prof Gauci said that contact tracing is being done with work and family.

She once again stressed that anyone with seasonal allergies should notify the authorities if they notice any differences or increases from the normal symptoms.

Prof Gauci appealed to the public to continue following the measures set out by the authorities, to avoid a spike in cases, particularly as it now shows there are a number of people who are carriers without being aware of the fact.
